The Society is governed by an eight member Board of Directors. Six directors are elected by the Society's membership. Two are appointed by the Board. The Board strives for diversity in its composition, looking to practicing educators, policymakers, and university researchers to provide comprehensive leadership. Directors hold staggered three-year terms. Every other year the membership elects two new Directors from a slate of six candidates prepared by the Board. All dues-paying members are eligible to vote and stand for election. Current Directors may stand for reelection after serving one term but cannot serve more than two terms in a row.
The next election of Board members will be held in the spring of 2008, when David Imig of the University of Maryland, David Hansen of Teachers College, and Gloria Ladson-Billings of the University of Wisconsin will complete their terms.
